DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
The Township Board established the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) Fund in 1988. The DDA was formed to sustain and improve the redevelopment of the downtown village area of the Township. A Board of nine individuals representing various segments of the DDA District and Township provide the direction for the activities of the DDA. The streetscape redevelopment continues to be maintained and enhanced including landscaping, fencing and street lighting. The DDA annually repays approximately $135,000 for the bonds that were sold to support the major streetscape project that occurred six years ago. The maintenance of the lights has been refined each year to the point where the process works quite smoothly now through a contract with J. Ranck Electric.
The DDA has been instrumental in the financing and development of
the Mid Michigan Medical Facility. The DDA owns the facility and entered
into a 10 year lease with MMMC. Lease payments are used to repay the bonds
and contribute toward the Freeland Sports Zone operating costs.
The DDA also entered into a lease agreement with Mid Michigan
Gymnastics to have their gymnastics competitive training program. With
this partnership MMG leases 20,000 square foot gymnastic facility that
is attached to the Freeland Sports Zone. This facility also houses All-Star Gemz
Competitive Cheer and Dance.
The DDA also owns the Freeland Sports Zone and contracts with the FCSA to fundraise, manage, and operate the facility. The Sports Zone includes:
Indoor walking/running track
Basketball Courts
Weight/Cardiovascular room
Community hall
Aerobics/Fitness rooms
Sports Development Room
Please visit the Freeland SportsZone website at www.Freeland-SportsZone.com for more detailed information.
The DDA meets the fourth Wednesday of every month at 11:30 a.m. in the Township Administration office.
